Holcim 1st-Half Net Rises 36% on Construction Demand

Holcim Ltd., the world's second- biggest cement maker, said first-half profit rose 36 percent as construction recovered in Europe and North America and as the company expanded through acquisitions.

Net income climbed to 370 million Swiss francs ($291 million) from 273 million francs a year earlier, the Jona, Switzerland-based company said in a statement. Twelve analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News had expected 379 million francs, according to the median estimate.

Chief Executive Markus Akermann, 57, has spent 3 billion francs on purchases in three years, including Apasco SA, Mexico's second-biggest cement maker. Holcim has also benefited from a recovery in the U.S., where its cement is being used in Boston's ``Big Dig'' underground expressway project. North American cement prices have risen 1 percent in a year.

``In Europe, demand for building materials should continue to develop at an impressive pace,'' the Swiss company said in its statement. ``Holcim also expects delivery volumes and selling prices to increase in North America.''

Shares of Holcim, which also supplied materials for the dock in Monaco's harbor and for the Rio de Janeiro subway, have risen 22 percent this year, valuing the company at 15.7 billion francs. Paris-based Lafarge SA, which overtook Holcim as the largest cement maker by sales in 2001, has fallen by 1 percent.

Holcim expects to exceed its forecast for an 8 percent increase in full-year operating profit, excluding acquisitions and exchange-rate variations, the company said.

Boston Project

U.S. projects include supplying materials to Boston's Central Artery/Tunnel highway plan, which required more than 2.9 million cubic meters of concrete and more than 250,000 tons of cement, according to Holcim's annual report.

Demand for cement gained in North America, helped by a spring that was drier this year than last year and that allowed construction projects to proceed. In Chicago, where Holcim also has operations, 0.76 inches (1.93 centimeters) of rain fell this April, 82 percent less than in the same month last year, according to the U.S. National Climatic Data Center's Web site.

Acquisitions are further boosting earnings. The company this year raised its stake in Apasco SA, Mexico's No. 2 cement maker and one of Holcim's most profitable units. Latin America was the biggest contributor to Holcim's operating profit last year.

Energy Savings

With the price of oil close to a record, Holcim is trimming energy costs by switching from oil and coal as fuel in cement furnaces, and using more oil waste, used tires, agricultural waste and animal meal.
